Toronto -
Defence R&D Canada, the research and development agency of Canada's Department
of National Defense, has incorporated a Bag End system in its new virtual
reality helicopter deck-landing simulator designed to create a realistic environment
in which to train Royal Canadian Air Force helicopter pilots.
John Bowen, head of the project, said, "The mission is to train pilots of both the big CH124 Sea King helicopters and the smaller Bell 206B ships, We needed a sound system that would go down to 17 Hz, to accurately recreate the sound of the helicopter's jet engines and rotor wash."
Bowen continued, "With the help of Glen Shaver at Shaver and Company, we researched several systems before deciding upon a Bag End system which demonstrated that its ELF subwoofer system could reproduce a flat acoustic response down to 8 Hz, well below our requirement."
The Bag End system utilized includes a pair of D18-E double-18 subwoofers - controlled by a Bag End Elf (Extended Low Frequency) signal processor to provide the bottom end of the sound spectrum - and a pair of TA2000-C sound systems to reproduce mid and high ranges. A trio of QSC PowerLight amplifiers powers the system.
