CBS-TV NETWORK PURCHASES BAG END INFRASUB-18's FOR ITS NEW WEST COAST HDTV EDITING FACILITY

CBS Television City in Los Angeles, the CBS Television Network's West Coast production facility, has purchased and installed a pair of BAG END Infrasub-18 subwoofers systems in its brand new High Definition Television editing suite.

"Our HDTV editing room, which is up and functioning right now, is one of the first two High Definition editing rooms on the West Coast," said Marc Hurd, director of technical operations for CBS Television City.

"CBS has chosen to be very aggressive in HDTV production," he said. "The federal government has given the industry a mandate to be broadcasting in digital format by 2006, and that - combined with CBS' ability to broadcast HDTV productions - means we will be providing viewers with the greatest quality picture and sound track available anywhere. It will be phenomenal."

Actually CBS has already broadcast some programs in HDTV, including a recent move, "The Bodyguard," and two football games, using completely separate sets of cameras and production equipment to gain experience in the new format.

The main difference between the standard TV picture, known as NTSC format, and HDTV is the number of vertical lines across the screen which make up the picture we see. In the NTSC format, the TV picture is comprised of 525 lines. In contrast, the HDTV picture is made up of more than twice that number of lines -1,080 - providing an infinitely sharper picture.

"It's like looking through your window," Hurd said.

A new generation of television sets capable of receiving the highly advanced HDTV telecasts is on the market and is already beginning to replace standard TV receivers, particularly in home theater installations. Hand-in-hand with the vastly improved quality of the picture, the quality of the sound track the new sets are able to reproduce will also be vastly improved.

After a period of testing subwoofer systems, CBS purchased the BAG END Infrasub-18 subwoofer systems for its HDTV editing room. These are the same subwoofer systems being used by Todd-AO, Paramount Pictures, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox here in the United States and other major motion pictures studios in England and Australia in their production and post-production facilities.

The self-powered BAG END Infrasub-18, which incorporates the exclusive BAG END ELF (extended low frequency) technology, provides a flat low frequency response from 100 Hz. to 8 Hz. in a very small, 3-cubic foot enclosure.

BAG END Loudspeaker Systems is in its third decade as a manufacturer of professional quality loudspeaker systems and components.
